Fitch says Standard Life PRT partnership strengthens competitiveness but adds illiquid-asset exposure
Standard Life will contribute £500m over five years, with partners providing a further £1.5bn.
Fitch Ratings says the pension risk transfer partnership Standard Life announced on 20 August with CVC Capital Partners, Prudential Financial, Goldman Sachs and MS&AD Insurance Group supports its competitive position in the UK PRT market. The rating agency expects the arrangement, once implemented and established, to improve the insurer's ability to participate in larger and more complex transactions. Additional capital and asset-sourcing capabilities should also enhance its capacity to support the annuity liabilities associated with those deals.
Fitch expects the transaction to be broadly neutral for capital. Standard Life is expected to contribute £500m to the partnership over five years, funded through internal cash generation without debt issuance, and a further £1.5bn is expected from the other strategic partners. New business written through the structure should be less capital-intensive for the insurer, which will bear only 25% of the capital strain. The structure could let Standard Life pursue bigger PRT cases without taking the full capital strain itself.
Standard Life wrote £3.9bn of PRT volumes in 2025, around a 10% market share, concentrated mainly in small and medium-sized transactions.
