From the industry
Against the Gods by Peter L. Bernstein (1996) surveys the history of probability, statistics and risk management in accessible prose. It follows developments in numbering systems, the abacus, algebra and algorithms and considers gambling, the Bell curve, averages and the notion of degree of belief. The book is worth reading for its clear explanation of how mathematical ideas shaped methods for quantifying uncertainty.
Beyond the industry
Thinking, Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman (2011) explains two modes of thought: a fast, intuitive system and a slower, deliberative system. It examines cognitive biases, overconfidence, difficulties in forecasting happiness and the effects of these tendencies on decision making in areas from markets to everyday planning. The book combines empirical findings and lucid exposition to show when intuition falters and when reflective thought pays off.
